Metallica superfan Fireman Dave gave it his all when he went up against the band in a “Who Knows Metallica” trivia contest on Jimmy Kimmel Live, but he couldn’t beat the band at their own game.

Dave got the first and last questions right, and clearly knew the answers to the others, but the metal legends refused to be defeated. Drummer Lars Ulrich was determined to win, and the other band members helped to wrestle Dave away from the buzzer.

It was the first time a band/artist won the “Who Knows…” trivia game, said Kimmel, relating how badly Ozzy Osbourne and Katy Perry lost to their number one fans.

If he had won, Dave would’ve gone home with a maroon ESP guitar signed by the band; as it turned out, the band went home with Dave’s wallet.

During the interview segment of the program, Metallica revealed why it took them eight years to release their new record Hardwired… to Self-Destruct, which debuted at number one on the Billboard album chart.

When Kimmel asked how Metallica came up with their iconic logo, frontman James Hetfield said he took a drafting class in high school, so he sketched it and then perfected the image. “I had a ruler and stuff,” he said.

For their performance segment, Metallica played to the largest outdoor crowd ever to gather at a Jimmy Kimmel Live show. In addition to blasting out “Atlas Rise” from their new album Metallica performed the fan favorite “For Whom the Bell Tolls.”
