2016 is the year when Beyoncé’s Lemonade solidified her stature as a black feminist icon, conveying her pain and triumph in the face of a sometimes hostile society. That arc came full circle on Halloween when the “Formation” singer dressed as “Black Barbie,” donning the swimsuit worn by the first (very white) Barbie doll ever produced.
Jay Z matched in a “40th Anniversary Black Collectors’ Edition” Ken doll outfit, and their daughter Blue Ivy Carter kept it real in a Barbie bomber jacket. Bey and Jay even encased themselves in cardboard boxes for maximum Toys-R-Us effect.
The look comes on the heels of Beyoncé’s highly successful Salt-N-Pepa costume, which included Blue Ivy and mom Tina. It’s a shame Halloween comes but once a year, because we’re confident Beyoncé could nail high-concept costumes every single day.
