Justin Timberlake’s Voting Booth Photo Could Bring Jail Time

By Amanda Wicks

Early voting for the 2016 presidential election is underway, and artists from all genres have been excited to share via social media that they’ve already cast their ballot. Unfortunately, Justin Timberlake may have been a tad too enthusiastic about posting an “I Voted!” picture.

Timberlake captured a selfie inside the voting booth after he’d completed the process, and shared it on Instagram. He noted that he even took the time to fly from Los Angeles to his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, to perform his civic privilege. “Hey! You! Yeah, YOU! I just flew from LA to Memphis to #rockthevote !!! No excuses, my good people! There could be early voting in your town too. If not, November 8th!” Timberlake wrote.

Not so fast, Timberlake. It turns out that Tennessee passed a law last year making it illegal to take pictures or record video or audio inside a voting booth. The law is meant to ensure the private act stays private. The punishment? Up to 30 days in jail and a $50 fine. Of course, no one has actually been charged with the crime since the law went into effect. A District Attorney’s Office rep for Shelby County, where Timberlake voted, told TMZ the case is “under review.”
