Nas Attacks Police Brutality on New Robin Thicke Single ‘Deep’

Some deep words from a veteran rapper.

By Jon Wiederhorn

Nas lashes out against the scourge of police brutality in a scathing 41-second solo spot in the beginning of Robin Thicke’s new, otherwise smooth and soulful single “Deep.”

The rapper begins by addressing the anger and frustration he feels when he tunes into the news and finds out about the latest incident involving an African-American killed by a white cop.

“The problem’s gettin’ worse/ A modern 1970’s Johannesburg/ Man it hurts to see a cop kill a black man alert/ Newsflash, police shoot black, distort facts/ Quick attack, unarmed men, murdered them/ It’s captured on cellphone video and they still let him go/ When will they stop killing ’em?” he raps at the outset of the song with no musical or rhythmic backing.

Then, Nas attacks the hypocrisy of a justice system that doesn’t treat African-American suspects the same as white suspects. “For a white man with a gun apprehended, he’s still alive/ Black man with a gun, he has no chance to survive/ They gonna shoot him dead soon as they see the brown of his eyes.”

Nas closes the poignant intro by looking at the situation through the eyes of a father. “And they ask me why you ain’t smiling Nas/ Because I have a son and I die inside when I’ve gotta tell him what was told to me/ Can’t play with your water gun, son, ’cause the police see a 7-year-old as a threat/ They think it’s right to kill a 7-year-old on sight ’cause he ain’t white.”
