‘Doesn’t Have the Range’ Could be the Breakout Music Phrase of 2016

It refers to those who lack a key element that defines them as truly memorable talent.

Meet the new big phrase in 2016: “Doesn’t have the range.” The way “on fleek” and “binge watching” have overtaken the English lexicon, this newest addition—a damning pop culture criticism—is sure to take off thanks to one overzealous fan Twitter account aimed at promoting all things Beyoncé.

@KingBeyonceStan began applying the term to all the major names in modern day music. The saying first originated in a Little Britain sketch and made fun of artists and musicians who lacked a key element that defined them as a true, memorable talent, according to New York Magazine.

Those who did have the range included:

Christina Aguilera

Mariah Carey

Beyoncé

As for who didn’t have the range, @KingBeyonceStan called out:

Jennifer Lopez

Lady Gaga

katy perry

Adele

Other pop-stars to fail the test include Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, Fifth Harmony, Nick Jonas among many others. Having the range is apparently the new watermark of talent, and according to @KingBeyonceStan, these artists just don’t cut it.

Bye, Felicia.
