If Lin-Manuel Miranda could get audiences interested in a centuries-old duel between Founding Fathers, why not put his mind to every pressing issue of the day? Following his Pulitzer Prize triumph and appearance at the White House, the Hamilton creator shared a new rap about Puerto Rico’s impending debt crisis.
On HBO’s Last Week Tonight, host John Oliver’s “20-minute explainer” concluded with Miranda rhyming about the state of affairs in the island territory: $70 billion public debt, 45 percent poverty rates and rapidly closing schools.
“Hoping to God John Oliver’s comical dissertation resonates with the Congress that got us in this situation,” he rapped. “Along with suicidal tax incentive declarations/ Yeah, we’ll pay your bonds first, close the hospital, f— the patients/This is an island, 100 miles across/The hurricane is coming and we’re running up a loss.”
The rap ended with a direct appeal to lawmakers, who can vote to assist Puerto Rico:
“Paul Ryan, I’ll come sing Hamilton at your house / I’ll do-si-do with Pelosi, I’ll wear my Hamilton blouse/ Your citizens are suffering, stop the bleeding, stop the loss/ Help Puerto Rico, it’s just 100 miles across!”
