There’s no better example of music making for strange bedfellows than a song that features Travis Scott and pop superstar Justin Bieber. Bieber appears on Scott’s song called “Maria, I’m Drunk” and many were curious as to how an international pop star landed on a Travis Scott project. According to an interview Scott gave Billboard, it was all Justin’s doing.
Scott confessed, “A kid like me next to a kid like Bieber, who is popular as f—… people would think, how did you get on a track with Bieber?'”
Travis goes on to say Justin FaceTimed him and expressed his interest in making music together. Upon learning of Bieber’s interest, the Rodeo rapper said he immediately knew Bieber would be perfect on the woozy song that already contained Yung Thug’s contribution. Since the version without Justin Bieber had leaked previously, Scott thought adding Justin would give the song a fresh take.
Once Bieber received the song, he called Scott to the studio. Travis recounted hearing Justin’s part for the first time. “As soon as I got to the studio he played it for me. He already had [his rap verse on it] done. That s— was f—— crazy. I went back in and produced over it. That s—‘s so pure!”
Working on “Maria, I’m Drunk” left the door open for the pair to collaborate in the future. If that doesn’t happen, Scott hopes the song will help people understand exactly how talented Justin Bieber is.
“That dude is f—— talented!” Scott declared. “Just cause he does theses certain songs, this n—a has history of doing hip-hop songs! His voice is a sample in its own.”
