The singing nun, Sister Cristina Scuccia won over fans in Italy after winning the country’s version of The Voice this past summer and stole the internet’s heart with her amazing pipes. And now she’s got people talking once again with her choice of debut single.
Sister Cristina released her own cover of Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” making it the most literal version of the 1984 song that you will ever hear.
The 26-year-old singing nun told the Italian Catholic paper, Avenire (via the BBC) she released the track “without any intention to provoke or shock,” but is prepared for the backlash that may come her way.
“It’s a song about the ability of love to make people new,” she said. “To redeem them from their past. And that’s how I wanted to interpret it.”
Sister Cristina has turned Madge’s track into a ballad saying it is “more similar to a lay prayer than to a pop piece” and hopes Madonna will get a chance to one day soon check out her new version.
“I’d love to see her face when she does,” she said, “and when they tell her it’s a nun singing.”
