Big Sean Hops on Maroon 5’s ‘Maps’ for Remix: Listen

By Marissa G. Muller

Big Sean has been hopping on songs all summer, from Ariana Grande’s “Best Mistake” to Common’s “Diamonds” and DJ Mustard’s “Face Down.”

But this week brings one of his unlikeliest collaborations yet: Maroon 5.

The Kanye West protégé flipped the first single from Maroon 5‘s upcoming Vthe decidedly pop love song “Maps.” Big Sean puts his stamp on the production, tricking out the song with a flashier drum beat and pitched-up vocals that give it a club-bound feel.

In fact, maybe that makes it less than unlikely. After all, the band released “Payphone,” off their last album, with a verse from rapper Wiz Khalifa.

Sean kicks off the newly-revamped song with a celebratory verse about his bottle-popping lifestyle and then swerves back into the original song’s love theme, spitting, “Made a few plays and now everything we talked about showin’ up / And I can show forever, but I’m still getting lost on a map to your heart / So far gone, lets take it back to the start…I guess ain’t no picnic basket / Put four years in and came out a bachelor.”

On the scale of most surprising Big Sean features to least surprising, his “Maps” remix probably falls right behind his collaboration with Fall Out Boy, “The Mighty Fall.” His new joint with Maroon 5 makes a little more sense since the group is veering towards more straightforward pop with their next release, out Sept. 2.
