Miley Cyrus, Not Safe For TV? The FCC Investigates

By Shannon Carlin

Miley Cyrus won’t stop—she can’t stop—just being Miley. But some parents are not okay with the tongue wagging and the twerking and the inflatable hot dog riding.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Miley’s concert special, which aired over July 4th weekend on NBC, received a few complaints—three to be exact—from the more than the two million viewers who tuned in, leading to an investigation from the Federal Communications Commission.

Yes, three might seem like a paltry number, but even still, the FCC is in the process of determining if the show actually did violate its rules against broadcast indecency or profanity.

The special showed concert footage and behind the scenes moments from Miley’s stops in Barcelona and Lisbon earlier this year. During the special, Miley was shown doing a sexy dance with a man dressed like Abraham Lincoln, which did not seem right to one viewer.

“Her performance was impropriate [sic] for broadcast TV, as she grinded along there was a costumed performer depicting President Lincoln following behind her and alongside her and the character acted quite lecherous even patting her on the backside,” one of the complaints read. “Very patriotic for the 4th ya think?”

Another person made a complaint about the show’s PG-13/TV-14 rating, while the third felt Miley was “very graphic and disturbing for a Sunday evening 9 pm summertime broadcast.”

According to the FCC’s official site, they have the authority to “issue civil monetary penalties, revoke a license or deny a renewal application.” Most likely, if the special is found guilty of obscenity, NBC will be fined.

A spokesperson for NBC declined to comment on the complaints.
