Fences are an alt rock act from Seattle that’s still looking for that major breakthrough — and might have finally found it, thanks in part to a fellow Washingtonian.
The three-piece released “Arrows” today (July 29), a song that features Seattle rap duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for a verse or two. It’s Macklemore on the rap, while Lewis contributes production for the new tune.
“Arrows” immediately has the feel of a Lewis production coupled with OneRepublic-esque vocals and instrumentation, with Fences frontman Christopher Mansfield detailing a story of being kicked out by his old man “when I told him that I lived this way.”
Macklemore jumps in after the second chorus, rapping about being “blinded by this limelight” and dropping a line about Tom Petty, whose new album drops today: “Tom Petty in this motherf**ker / All I wanna do is free fall.”
It’s not the first collaboration between Fences and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. The former appeared on Macklemore’s “Otherside,” while Macklemore also showed up on Fences’ “Songs About Angels” earlier this year.
Fences’ new album Lesser Oceans is due out Oct. 14.
