Weezer Talk New Album, Monstrous Cover Artwork, Going Back to the ’90s in KROQ Interview

By Kevin Rutherford

Weezer‘s first new album in four years is coming this September and already the band is beginning their promotion cycle for the record, premiering first single “Back to the Shack” on Radio.com station KROQ this morning and doing an accompanying interview about the song and new album, Everything Will Be Alright in the End.

In the interview, frontman Rivers Cuomo touched on the band’s decision to get back with Ric Ocasek of the Cars as a producer for the new record. Ocasek worked on the band’s debut album, generally referred to as the Blue Album, and 2001’s Green Album; both are self-titled.

“We thought about it long and hard and talked to a lot of producers,” Cuomo told KROQ’s Kevin and Bean. “Ultimately we realized we wanted to make a record that had the sonic qualities of our first record and really, who could do a better job than Ric, who produced that first record. We started talking to him and it was starting to feel really exciting again. He came out to LA and brought his two Les Paul guitars, which we recorded the whole first album with, once we plugged in and got everything going the magic came back. It was very fun and exciting for all of us.”

The band also referenced the album’s cover, which features a monster crawling through a scenic portrait.

“Right now all I can say is that there’s something about the vibe of that painting really appeals to me where it’s kind of terrifying and it’s kind of endearing and cute at the same time,” Cuomo said. “It’s right on this line, this edge between scary and funny which I think is appealing to me. I think Weezer has been on that line for a lot of our career.”
