Weezer Want to Take You Back to 1994 with ‘Back to the Shack’: Listen

By Kevin Rutherford

Weezer‘s Rivers Cuomo is aware of the criticism about his band’s more recent output and he streamlines that awareness into the four-piece’s new single from their upcoming album.

“Back to the Shack,” premiered today via Radio.com station KROQ, finds Cuomo admitting that he, among other things, “forgot disco sucks” and that he “should play the lead guitar” and get drummer Patrick Wilson off electric guitar and back behind the kit.

“Let’s go back, back to the shack,” he sings on the chorus, promising to “rock out like it’s ’94” and to “turn off those stupid singing shows.”

The song is so self-aware that it might be off-putting, but musically “Back to the Shack” finds Weezer pining for the days of yore in a way that fans and former fans who wish for a return to the group’s pre-2000s form could appreciate. There’s crunching guitars reminiscent of Maladroit and prior, plus a Cuomo solo, something that’s been sorely missed over the past few years.

“Back to the Shack” marks the first full preview of Weezer’s new album Everything Will Be Alright in the End, which is out this September. It’s the first album of new music the band has released since a particularly productive late 2000s run that ended with 2010’s Hurley.

In addition to premiering their new song, Weezer also spoke to KROQ about the new album. Check out the full interview here.
