‘Straight Outta Compton’ Biopic Issues Apology for ‘Offensive’ Female Casting Call

By Shannon Carlin

The casting company behind the new N.W.A. biopic, Straight Outta Compton, received a lot of unwanted attention for a female casting call that was considered by many to be offensive and racist. Now the company is coming out to apologize for the “insensitive” nature of the listing.

On the call sheet, the company, Sandi Alessi, explained they were looking for four different types of girls, which they unwisely ranked from A to D. In its description, “A” girls were listed as the “hottest of the hottest” and “must have real hair” while “B” girls should be “light skinned.”

However, the “D” girls were listed as having to be “African-American” and “poor, not in in good shape.” Even more offensive, they considered Beyoncé to only be a “B.”

Kristan Berona of Sandi Alessi took to Facebook late last week to apologize for the “offensive language to recruit women”

“My intention was not to offend anyone and I’m so deeply sorry for not realizing the insensitivity in its content,” she wrote. “I’m truly so sorry.”

Universal Pictures, the studio behind the film, also released a statement about the casting call via The Hollywood Reporterseparating themselves from Sandi Alessi.

“Universal Pictures and the filmmakers for Straight Outta Compton did not approve and do not condone the information in this casting notice,” the statement read. “We regret and sincerely apologize for being in any way associated with the offensive descriptions it contained.”

The film, which is reportedly set to hit theaters next August 15, also features Ice Cube‘s son O’Shea Jackson Jr. who will play his father.
