"It's a song about looking at where you are and appreciating what you have."

Jake Owen may be riding high after having his fifth No. 1 song “Beachin,'” but the Vero Beach, Florida singer is already thinking about catching that next wave.

And it’s very different from the one before. In an interview with Radio.com this week, Owen said his next single will be the powerful ballad “What We Ain’t Got.”

“It’s a big, big step for me to put out a song that’s a ballad that has a lot of meaning behind it,” he told Radio.com. “It’s a deep song that deals on a lot of levels with everyone looking at their own life. We all work so hard day to day, and we want more and more and more. This is a world of wanting more. It’s a song about looking at where you are and appreciating what you have, ’cause once it’s gone we all want what we don’t have.”

Owen said that it’s important at this time in his career to put out a song with depth and validity.

“That’s what country music was based on, great songs,” he said. Listen to “What We Ain’t Got” below.

“What We Ain’t Got” was written by Travis Meadows and Travis Jerome Goff, and the song’s deep meaning is what convinced Owen to cut it for himself.

“I am really happy with where I am in my life, with a wife and a little 2-year-old girl and a great career and a headline tour. But I still find every day I wake up I find things that I want more,” Owen said. “That’s why this song really related to me. The main chorus of this song has the meaning of a guy losing his girl and wanting her back after realizing that everything he wanted previous to her leaving is what drew her away or took her away.”

He added: “I haven’t lost…thank goodness, I have the beautiful women in my life. But I don’t ever want my job and lifestyle to get in the way of what’s real back home. I really related to that song a lot, and I have a lot of friends that I’ve watched work their lives away, too, and sometimes you just have to step back from it.”

“What We Ain’t Got” is the third single off Owen’s fourth studio album Days of Gold. And as he told Radio.com in a conversation after the album’s release this past December, the new single not only carries a powerful statement but is vastly different from previous singles like “Days of Gold” and “Beachin'” when it comes to “melodic structure and even lyrics.”

It’s “definitely a musical statement,” Owen said, “just me and a piano and a steel guitar, which is a long way from the rocking chaos in the song ‘Days of Gold.'”
