Tim McIlrath Gets Introspective on New Rise Against Album ‘The Black Market’

By Jay Tilles

Rise Against released their seventh studio album The Black Market today (July 15) and front man Tim McIlrath spoke with Kevin & Bean on KROQ Los Angeles (a Radio.com station) to talk about the new release.

“I felt like we demanded more out of ourselves on this record,” confessed McIlrath. “It wasn’t just like ‘Let’s do another record.’ It was more like ‘Let’s create something. Let’s go into this and prove that we still have what it takes to challenge ourselves, challenge our listeners. Let’s take our fans and our community down this road with us. Let’s build something, but do it in a way that’s not just rehashing anything old.’”

When Kevin and Bean asked how it felt to be in seven albums in to their career, McIlrath paused and reflected.

“I don’t know what that was, I don’t know if that was sort of like mortality, like a midlife band kind of thing, but it was something about going into this record… it was the first time I had really counted our records. I think that before this record it took a journalist to tell me what record we were on. I wasn’t keeping track of them”

“This was the first time I really had a grasp on the longevity of the band thus far and that we’re still around. That made me look inward at like who we are as a band, what we do, what we mean to our fans, what we mean to music. I was doing a lot of reflecting on that. I started writing about it. I didn’t know what else to do besides write about it. So I’m just writing about our role and what we expect from ourselves and who we should be versus who we want to be, that kind of thing.”

Rise Against are set to play string of U.S. dates beginning with Made In America Festival on Aug. 30, followed by a European tour.
