Rapper Claims Eminem & Busta Rhymes Stole His Beat for Their New Track, ‘Calm Down’

By Shannon Carlin

The first thing you should think of when you hear Eminem and Busta Rhymes‘ new track, “Calm Down,” is House of Pain; or perhaps “Harlem Shuffle”; the song is built on the original’s horn intro used prominently in House of Pain’s “Jump Around,” and before the end, the guys are yelling “Jump Around” in honor of the ’90s hip-hop group.

But the rapper, Genesis LXG would like us all to know, the duo really stole that appropriating horn-looping beat from him.

The rapper took to Twitter yesterday (June 30) to question the similarities between “Calm Down” and his own song, “House of Pain,” which he released back in March.

In a series of tweets Genesis writes, “So dude jacked my beat and gave it to Eminem and Busta #Jacked,” and later questions if the “Calm Down” similarity was  “#Coincidence” or just plain theft by the Em and Busta track’s producer, Scoop Deville.

Listening to both tracks, one can’t help but give some leverage to Genesis’ assessment. Both clearly make good use of the horn loop, which leads us to wonder whether Deville did have prior knowledge of this track or do we have a case of great minds think alike on our hands, which, let’s be honest, is very unlikely.

Neither Eminem, Busta nor Scoop Deville have responded to Genesis’ claims of theft. Genesis has not said if he plans on taking any legal action.

Someone who has weighed in on “Calm Down” though is House of Pain’s frontman, Everlast, who tweeted that he has known about the song for awhile and did a verse for an upcoming remix. He also let everyone know, “for the record I think it’s ridiculously banging.”

Busta Rhymes’ new album is scheduled for release later this week.
