The 5 Best Moments from Jay Z and Beyoncé’s ‘On The Run’ Tour Launch

By Courtney E. Smith

Last night (June 25) Jay Z and Beyoncé played a show in Miami sayin’ “how the hell did this s–t happen, oh baby.” It was the premiere of their co-headlining On The Run tour, which has been criticized as both a perfunctory cash-grab for the celebrity couple and the must-see blockbuster event of the summer. Fans were delighted by a few marquee moments, most notably the reveal of the couple’s wedding footage when has never previously been released, and an extremely long setlist. When you’ve got that many hits, why not play them all.

Below are the best 5 moments from On The Run‘s opening date.

1. The never-before-seen wedding footage

The family footage thing is more of a staple at Beyoncé shows, but the duo gave fans a snapshot into their wedding last night. The video showed Bey and Jay getting their matching IV ring finger tattoos and on their wedding day. The footage rolled while they did their cover of “Forever Young,” a track the duo have been performing live since 2010.

2. Beyoncé wore two new costumes designed by Versace

She opened the show doing “’03 Bonnie & Clyde” with Jay Z, in a black bodysuit that covered very little of her body and was covered with netting. It was matched up with a balaclava made of the name netted material, meant to recall the tour poster (above).

Her second Versace outfit was a long-sleeved bodysuit matched with a bejeweled turban.

3. The setlist was 43 songs long!

Seriously. Bey and Jay have a lot of hits of their own, some hits together and they chose to do some covers. There was the aforementioned “Forever Young,” and Beyoncé dusted off her cover of Lauryn Hill’s “Ex-Factor” — last seen in about 2012. It may be a politically charged choice given the rumors swirling about Jay being a cheater after that Solange in the elevator dust-up. Jay Z followed that with “Song Cry” to make it a morose and beautiful moment.

4. Their opening film was a salute to film noir

The trailers teasing the tour indicated that it would be Bonnie & Clyde themed, but the nearly two-minute long film that kicked off the show was a very French, very noir piece of cinema. There were touches of French cinema in Beyoncé’s Parisian-inspired white striped bodysuit, all the way down to her Brigitte Bardot-esque bangs she sported to Jay Z’s wide-brimmed hat. Oh, and of course, in the French spoken-word voice overs, which were subtitled in English.

5. Blue Ivy made an appearance

The couple are careful not to show their daughter Blue Ivy’s face on social media, but home videos of their daughter made it right to the center of the stage for On The Run. During “Halo,” which they performed as a duet, the fans got to see some of Blue’s best moments — her first time meeting daddy, in the hot tub with mommy, learning to walk and learning to play piano.
