Willie Nelson Teases Kacey Musgraves Duet, Gives Pot Smokers Advice: ‘Don’t Get High and Forget to Vote’

By Kurt Wolff

Kacey Musgraves has been on tour this month with Willie Nelson and Alison Krauss. And according to a new interview with Nelson in, of all places, CelebStoner, the “Merry Go Round” singer and the country legend are planning to collaborate on a recording project.

“Kacey and I are planning on doing a song together,” Nelson said in the interview, “an old song I wrote called ‘You Sure This Is Where You Want to Be.’ We’re going to do some recording together and that’s going to be cool.”

Nelson wrote the song (with Buddy Emmons) decades ago, and it first appeared on his 1965 album Country Willie – His Own Songs under the title “Are You Sure.” The song also appeared on the stripped-down 2003 collection Crazy: The Demo Sessions.

Musgraves has already gone on record as a big fan of that particular song. In a 2013 Facebook post, she called it “two minutes and 13 seconds of the realest s–t you’ll ever hear. Never gets old.”

In the interview, Nelson said that the tour with Musgraves and Krauss is “really a lot of fun. I look forward to touring with those folks again one day.” Musgraves leaves the tour at the end of June, though Krauss stays on board for dates in July (and they’re joined on some stops by Jason Isbell).

Nelson’s new album Band of Brothers just dropped a week ago, but he revealed details on another album he has planned for release later this year called December Day (named after another of his vintage songs).

“It’s mostly me and sister [Bobbie Nelson] with a little harmonica and a little bass in there,” Nelson said. “We’re doing nine songs that I wrote and a couple of Irving Berlin songs—’Alexander’s Ragtime Band’ and ‘What’ll I Do.’ It’s coming out sometimes before the holidays, maybe October.”

And since the site is called CelebStoner, the interview also covered such topics as Colorado’s new law that legalized marijuana sales (“the future looks good”), vaporizers (“they’re all right”) and edibles (“I’m not a huge advocate”).

Nelson even offered some crucial advice for members of his Teapot Party: “Don’t get high and forget to vote.” In other words, he said, “if it’s the day to go vote, make sure you go vote before you burn one down.”
