Scotty McCreery Ordered to Pay Former Manager $239K

By Annie Reuter

Scotty McCreery’s court battle with his former manager has come to a close.

On Wednesday (June 18), a jury verdict said the country singer and former American Idol winner is to pay his former manager Todd Cassetty $239,329.

Last July, Cassetty sued McCreery for back pay. He said he was owed 15 percent of McCreery’s gross revenue for his five months as manager. Court documents listed Scotty McCreery, his mother Judith McCreery and Scotty’s production company Blue Crew Productions, Inc. as defendants.

Throughout the trial, it was revealed that both parties never finalized a written agreement for their business relationship. When they parted ways last April, Cassetty argued that he was never compensated. Information including email exchanges were presented where McCreery said, “I will make sure you get a large 15% touring check … this month.” At the end of the relationship, that 15 percent promise became 2 percent instead, according to Cassetty.

The lawsuit against McCreery was originally filed for $570,000. The country singer previously asserted that there was no truth to Cassetty’s suit in a press statement:

“There is no truth to these allegations. I have offered to pay Todd more than once, but he wanted an unreasonable amount for only five months of work. Anyone who knows me knows how I conduct myself, so I am not worried they will believe any of this. This is just an attempt to embarrass me and my family. The facts will come out when we have our day in court.”

And the facts did come out, with McCreery sticking to his claims that he always intended to pay back Cassetty.

“While it has been difficult to risk having my reputation challenged, I always believed that the truth would prevail, and it has,” McCreery said in a statement. “I have a management team, including a professional business manager, in Nashville advising me. Now I am happy to put this behind me and focus on my music. As always, I am thankful to my fans for all of their support.”
