Watch: Linkin Park Are the Heroes They Believe Rock Needs in ‘Until It’s Gone’

By Kevin Rutherford

For the first music video from their upcoming new album The Hunting Party, Linkin Park chose to get a little deep.

The clip for “Until It’s Gone,” which premiered today (June 11) on Facebook, finds the rock six-piece at an interesting crossroads. The nu-metal genre to which the band belonged and made its lucrative living off of has dried up, rock moving in a softer direction on a mainstream level, crunching guitars even replaced by synths and acoustic or folk instrumentation at times.

The Hunting Party marks Linkin Park’s attempt to inject some edge back into rock, a manifesto exemplified by the “Until It’s Gone” video, according to the band members in an interview with Mashable.

“The video has an undertone of the world going to s–t,” Joe Hahn, who directed the video, said of “Until It’s Gone.” “There is a black ooze that crystallizes the world. It is an infection. This black ooze is representing other music out there. We are merely here to fill in that sliver with the music that we bring. I guess you can say that we are filling a void.”

Sure enough, “Until It’s Gone” features the band in a back-to-basics formula, merely playing their instruments and singing along to the song and its towering chorus. In another shot, a woman is seen with said ooze coming out of her ears, with others experiencing similar fates.

“Until It’s Gone” is the second single from The Hunting Party, which sees the band attempting a return to form in terms of its hard rock roots.

“Rock music, even the most popular bands, they’re not really influencing the zeitgeist,” Shinoda told in an interview. “It’s not moving the needle of pop culture. I don’t want rock to be pop, I don’t want rock to go out there like that. But I do want it to be exciting, and right now it’s… moderately exciting.”

The Hunting Party hits stores June 17.
