Watch Steve Perry Explain His Return To The Stage After 20 Years

By Shannon Carlin

“Where have you been all this time?” It’s the question Steve Perry attempted to answer when he joined The Eels for a second time on Saturday night (May 31) at a show at Washington D.C.’s Lincoln Theatre.

Last weekend, Perry joined the Eels onstage in St. Paul, Minnesota after nearly 20 years to perform the band’s song “It’s A Motherf—-r” from the 2000 album, Daisies of the Galaxy.

In a clip from the show (via Ultimate Classic Rock), Perry said he felt a personal connection to the song, explaining, “It is a song about profound loss. I recently lost someone who is the love of my life and I revisited that song. It meant even more to me.”

After performing a stripped-down cover of Sam Cooke’s “Only Sixteen” and Journey classics like “Open Arms” and “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’,” Perry revealed that it was his friend and croquet partner, Eels frontman Mark Everett who coerced him into return to the stage.

According to Perry, Everett is always asking him to come out and sing, but the Journey man says he always responds the same way, “Well, you know, I haven’t done it in a long time. I dunno.”

But Everett is persistent, always asking, “Why don’t you get your ass out and sing with us?”

“I want to thank The Eels for getting my ass out and singing,” Perry told the crowd.

Will Perry ever rejoin his old band? That’s unclear, but current Journey frontman, Arnel Pineda wouldn’t mind Perry stopping by sometime to sing “Don’t Stop Believing.”

“He should come back. His voice [is] still [there],” Pineda tweeted last week. “Missed that voice.”

Pineda even wrote that he’d step down, if Perry wanted his job back. “He can take over too,” he tweeted. “[It’s] his righteous place anyway..wanna see them happy together.”

Perry has not performed with Journey since 1991, or performed solo concerts since 1995. Perry has struggled with his health in recent years undergoing hip-replacement surgery in 1998 and two melanoma-removal surgeries in 2013.
