Bay Area metal-funk legends Faith No More surprised fans yesterday by launching a Twitter account and making some pretty big announcements in 140 characters or less.

Their first tweet plugged their upcoming appearance at a festival in Poland on July 5.  Their website displays a poster promoting their July 4 festival date in England at Hyde Park, where they will play on the bill with Black Sabbath and Soundgarden. (Coincidentally, FNM drummer Mike Bordin did a stint as Black Sabbath’s touring drummer in 1997.) The site’s tour section has not been updated as of press time: it still shows their 2012 tour schedule.

Up until now, the band communicated on Twitter via the official accounts of bassist Billy Gould and  keyboardist Roddy Bottum. But the new FNM Twitter did more than just announce more an upcoming festival date. They seem to be hinting at new music.

Faith No More last released a new album, Album of the Year, in 1997, their final album before disbanding a year later. They reunited in 2009.

This comes just days after the news that frontman Mike Patton (and not Axl Rose) is the rock singer with the greatest vocal range. We’re not sure what songs from Patton’s catalog that they used to make this determination (as he’s also fronted Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk and Peeping Tom), but a fun fact about the man is that he provided all of the zombie noises for the 2007 Will Smith film I Am Legend.
