Avicii Concert in Toronto Sends At Least 29 People To The Hospital

By Shannon Carlin

This past Saturday night (May 17), a handful of Avicii fans in Toronto partied a little too hard and didn’t even get to see their favorite Swedish DJ perform.

According to the Toronto Sunat least 29 people ended up in the hospital for “illnesses related to alcohol or drugs.” The paramedics said that 10 concertgoers at the sold out all-ages show had gotten sick before Avicii even made it on stage.

“That number is unusually high,” one officer told the paper. “It’s not typical for that many people to require hospitalization at that kind of concert.”

It’s been reported that the venue, Rogers Centre, did have medics on site, but due to the overwhelming amount of people needing medical assistance were forced to call EMS.

The paper also reported that one person was arrested and at least one other was treated for drug use. Five people were said to be in serious condition but all are expected to fully recover.

That being said, Toronto city counselor Giorgio Mammoliti said he blamed the show’s promoter, Ink Entertainment, for the hospitalization saying they should not have organized an all-ages show.

“This only proves that it doesn’t matter whether these events are held on privately owned or government lands, they are dangerous events to hold as ‘all-ages,’ allowing kids to be present,” he said in a press release (via CTV News).

The counselor also pointed fingers at the parents who allowed their children to attend the show, writing, “They say it takes a village to raise a child and, as a member of that village, I want to stop the irresponsible decisions made by other parents.”

This comes weeks after Miami’s Ultra Fest where gatecrashers sent security guard Ericka Mack to the hospital after being trampled. After the incident, city officials looked to ban the festival, but the Miami City Commission voted 4-1 to allow Ultra to maintain its current location at Bayfront Park.
