Arcade Fire (Sort of) Strikes Back at Deadmau5

By Scott T. Sterling

Given Win Butler and Arcade Fire‘s penchant for being merry pranksters on the band’s current Reflecktor campaign, it was only a matter of time before they responded to EDM star Deadmau5‘s recent Twitter tirade against them.

The notoriously touchy Deadmau5 (known to his mom as Joel Zimmerman) took offense to Butler’s onstage banter during Arcade Fire’s headlining set at the first weekend of this year’s Coachella festival, which included, “shout-out to all the bands still playing actual instruments at this festival.”

According to Consequence of Sound, Arcade Fire featured video images of Deadmau5 on an LCD screen while performing the encore number, “Normal Person,” from the band’s most recent album during a show in St. Louis last night (April 27). Among the song’s lyrics include, You know, I can’t tell if I’m a normal person/It’s true, I think I’m cool enough, but am I cruel enough?/Am I cruel enough for you?” The song also starts off with the age-old question: “Do you like rock ‘n’ roll music?”

It’s a song that was inspired by an incident that occurred when Butler and bandmate/wife Régine Chassagne stayed at a bed and breakfast in Jamaica: “The lady said, ‘Oh, you’re not in one of those weird bands? You’re normal people, right?'” the singer told Rolling Stone. “It was strange because these were abnormal people in the Jamaican context.”

Arcade Fire took the opportunity of performing in St. Louis to cover two of the city’s most famous musical icons: Nelly (“Country Grammar”) and Chuck Berry (“Roll Over Beethoven”).
