Dolly Parton Defends Miley Cyrus, Gears Up for Live Twitter Chat

By Annie Reuter

Dolly Parton is a strong believer in Miley Cyrus. Having seen her grow up right before her eyes, Parton defends Cyrus in her writeup on Cyrus as a part of Time’s 100 Most Influential People that published yesterday (April 23).

“She knows what she’s doing,” Parton writes. “She was very proud of the work she did as Hannah Montana, but people were gonna leave her there forever. And she was just smotherin’ and chokin’ in it. So she felt she had to do something completely drastic. And she did. She made her point, she made her mark, and more power to her.”

Parton went on to praise Cyrus’ songwriting talent and singing ability.

“The girl is smart. And she doesn’t have to be so drastic. But I will respect her choices. I did it my way, so why can’t she do it her way?” she adds.

As Parton gears up for her forthcoming album Blue Smoke and before her live performance on QVC on Sunday (April 27), she will be conducting a live chat on Twitter. Fans can tweet the country legend their questions @DollyParton with the #AskDolly on April 27 starting at 4 p.m. CT.

In promotion of Blue Smoke, due out May 13, Parton will be performing songs off the record as well as her classic hits on QVC following her Twitter Q&A. Blue Smoke is Parton’s first album of new music since 2011’s Better Day.

“On this CD I think there are all of the colors of my life in all the areas of music that you’ve allowed me to dabble in through the years,” Parton said in a press statement. “You will hear my old-world mountain voice on songs like ‘Banks of The Ohio’ and ‘If I Had Wings,’ my tender side on songs like ‘Miss You – Miss Me’ and ‘Unlikely Angel,’ my country/bluegrass side on songs like ‘Home,’ ‘Blue Smoke’ and ‘Don’t Think Twice’ and my funny tongue-in-cheek side on ‘Lover du Jour.'”
