Joy Williams of the Civil Wars Recording Solo Album

The album would be her first solo LP since 2005

By Courtney E. Smith

The civil war within the Civil Wars seems to have reached some sort of end, or at least plateau, with the announcement from Joy Williams on Facebook that she is recording a solo album. Posting a video with an 18-second snippet of new music, Williams wrote, “Started recording a solo album yesterday. Butterflies. Bittersweet. Mostly sweet.”

Williams also revealed that she’s been songwriting with Matt Morris, son of country star Gary Morris and one of the quiet breakout stars from the Mickey Mouse Club cast that included Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. He co-wrote Kelly Clarkson’s “Miss Independent,” among other musical ventures.

The female half of the folk duo that may or may not be any longer recently also went out on her own to record the theme song to ACM’s new series TURN with The National’s Matt Berninger.

She last recorded a solo LP in 2005 with Genesis, back when she was still primarily a Christian pop artist.

The Civil Wars will release a remastered version of Live At Eddie’s Attic, an album recorded at a 2009 performance, for Record Store Day on April 19. The recording will also be made available digitally for the first time ever starting on April 13.
