Joe Jonas Talks New Music, Justin Bieber: ‘I Think We All Saw It Coming’

By Kevin Rutherford

Call Joe Jonas some sort of amateur therapist.

The former Jonas Brother spoke out about his solo career in the most recent issue of Scene magazine,  but he also riffed on his thoughts on the continuing saga of pop-star-turned-bad-boy Justin Bieber.

“I’ve had an easier route than most,” the middle Jonas, 24, tells the magazine. “The youngsters just turning 20, the Biebers of the world, are under a microscope. [Bieber] is having a very tough time finding balance.

“I think we all saw it coming. Your dad is your party animal—that’s going to sum it up pretty quick. There’s an equation for some sort of explosion.”

Jonas is, of course, referring to Bieber’s recent run-ins with the law, most notably his arrest in Miami last January for DUI, capping off a series of events during which the singer went from innocuous teen heartthrob to troubled teen heartthrob.

The singer says he’s begun work on his next studio LP, which will be his first since 2011’s Fastlife. “I’m trying to [make it] something that I really want it to be — do music that I’m really proud of and not let too many cooks in the kitchen,” he says of that album, which currently has no release timetable. He can, however, reveal one big-name collaborator: Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes, with whom Jonas wrote and recorded in Hammond’s barn studio in upstate New York.

His solo record comes months removed from a supposed tour with the Jonas Brothers that never ended up happening, despite much hype surrounding the reunion and even a few new songs dropped here and there. Just prior to the band’s tour, the trio — which also includes brothers Nick and Kevin Jonas — called it quits, citing an “unanimous decision” to do so.
