Mick Jagger’s longtime girlfriend, L’Wren Scott, has died of an apparent suicide, according to CBS New York. She was 49.

The New York Daily News reports the body of Scott was found hanging from a scarf on a doorknob by her assistant March 17 at 200 11th Ave, New York, around 10 a.m.

Scott had been linked to Jagger since 2001. The Rolling Stones are currently on tour in Australia.

Scott was discovered by renowned photographer Bruce Weber and made her name as a model, working for for brands including Chanel and Thierry Mugler, In 1994 she transitioned her career behind the camera, serving as stylist to photographer Herb Ritts on shoots for outlets like Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone – in fact, it was one of these shoots was where she reportedly met Jagger.

She evolved that role into one as a stylist for A-list actors like Nicole Kidman (who, at the time of her death, she worked with exclusively), Sarah Jessica Parker and Ellen Barkin. Scott launched her successful, eponymous fashion line in 2006, creating couture as well as a capsule collection for Banana Republic that was available in 2013.

She has also done costume design for  movies including Diabolique, Ocean’s Thirteen, Eyes Wide Shut and Shine a Light, Martin Scorsese’s documentary about The Rolling Stones. Scott’s pieces have been worn by a plethora of stars, not the least of whom include Madonna and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Scott canceled her planned fall 2014 London Fashion Week show earlier this year, citing production delays. Instead, the design house announced plans to reveal the collection over social media and make the collection viewable to retailers and fashion editors in her Paris showroom from March 2-5.

In a 2011 feature for The TelegraphScott spoke about her passion for design, leaving this quote about her goals as a designer: “I’ve never met a woman who thinks they’ve got a good enough figure – however perfect they look – which is sad, because no one else can see these perceived flaws; they’re entirely internal. But I feel I’ve succeeded if I can design a dress that you can always rely on, that will stand the test of time, that becomes like a dear friend.”

“This is a horrible and tragic loss,” said Madonna in a statement to Billboard. “I’m so upset. I loved L’Wren’s work and she was always so generous with me.”

This is a developing story…
