Samsung really knows how to put together a headline grabbing showcase at South by Southwest. Last year, the company nabbed Prince and this year, and yesterday (March 10) it was announced that this year they not only got Jay Z to show up, but Kanye West too. Even better, the two are going to perform together. Yes, you will have a chance to watch the throne again.
According to Mashable, the one-night only event takes place on Wednesday (March 12), with the location set to be announced the day of the show. But, not everyone will get a chance to get into the event. Samsung plans to distribute concert wristbands only to owners of Galaxy devices with the newly launched ad-free radio service called Milk Music downloaded on their devices.
This is the first time Jay and Ye have performed together since their year-long Watch the Throne tour that kicked off in 2011. That same year, they also performed at SXSW.
Jay–who performed at SXSW in 2012 during an event to promote America Express’ Twitter-based discounts program–teamed up with Samsung in 2013 to release his album, Magna Carta…Holy Grail, having the company buy one million downloadable copies of the album and offer them free via an app.
While HOV is teaming up with Kanye once again, it seems he also collaborated with Daft Punk a few years back. Yesterday, a supposed leaked collaboration between the two called “Computerized” surfaced, but now Pitchfork is claiming that they can verify that in fact this collaboration is real and not a hoax.
While the French duo stick to their robot ways, Jay raps about Apple’s iTouch and BlackBerry. No Galaxy shout-outs to be reported though. Wonder how Samsung feels about this.
