When Sky Ferreira goes on tour she usually needs a medic.

Last year, when she hit the road with Smith Westerns and later Vampire Weekend, she was having trouble with her voice. For seven months, the doctors told her it was bronchitis, but it turned out that it was actually a nodule on her vocal cords that later turned into a hemorrhage. “I never had an opportunity to take a break,” she said. “It’s kind of like if you break your arm, it needs time to heal. It was basically like playing basketball with a broken arm.”

Ferreira’s voice is completely healed now, but that doesn’t mean she can’t find a way to hurt herself. While on tour with Miley Cyrus, Ferreira cut herself so bad that she needed 60 stitches. Not that Ferreira even noticed, as she explained later on Instagram alongside a photo of her with a bandaged leg and a sheet over her head. “I just figured it was some blood,” she wrote. She even managed to finish her set, chalking it up to “#ThePowerOfAdrenalin.”

Or perhaps, it was just straight up girl power.

Ferriera told that she was excited to be a part of Miley’s Bangerz Tour because it marked a first for her. “I’ve actually never really toured with any girls before,” Ferreira said. “My bands have always been all guys.” Which is surprising, being that her debut, Night Time, My Time, is an honest look at not only her life, but what it’s like to be a woman in the world today. “I feel like a lot of females get it right away,” she said.

But her feminine take has led some reviewers, specifically male ones, to misinterpret some of her songs. “When I see some reviews about the song ‘Boys,’ they think it’s really childish or something, even though it’s not at all,” Ferreira explained. “It’s kind of like having to go through the cycle of guys, or whatever, people in general. It’s even about friends. You have bad friends, you have bad friends, you have bad friends, you find a good friend somewhere in between. It’s kind of that whole thing, more than some kind of cheerleader type thing.”

Ferreira doesn’t let the reviews get to her. In her mind this is just like what it would have been like if she had went to high school, just on a larger scale. “They don’t know what it’s like to be a young woman now, let alone be a young woman constantly under a light, like at good times and bad,” she said. “There’s a lot of pressures.”

Of course, there is one guy who seems to understand: her boyfriend Zachary Cole Smith of DIIV. “We’re around each other all the time, so I think whatever we do, kind of rubs off on each other,” Ferreria explained. “So yeah, he does influence me musically…It’s nice to have someone around  that’s creative at all times.”
