Fred Armisen Announced as New Bandleader for ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’

By Scott T. Sterling

With Jimmy Fallon taking The Roots with him on his much-ballyhooed move from NBC’s Late Night to The Tonight Show, it has been revealed that new Late Night host Seth Meyers is bringing along an old friend to handle musical responsibilities going forward.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Armisen and his 8G Band will be the house band when fellow Saturday Night Live alum Meyers takes over the Late Night reins later on this month.

Meyers himself made the initial announcement with a tweet and a photo depicting the new host posing with Armisen and his 8G band members.

Meyers sent an additional tweet to assure fans that “Fred will curate and lead the band, and continue to run it even when he’s off shooting Portlandia,” referencing Armisen’s popular IFC show with Carrie Brownstein.

Armisen’s musical history is well documented, including his days drumming for the punk band Trenchmouth, a mid-’90s stint in the Blue Man Group and his fictitious character “Jens Hannemann,” an over-the-top drummer who is the star of his own 2007 instructional video, Complicated Drumming Technique.

Armisen left Saturday Night Live at the end of last season, with Meyers jumping ship to his new hosting duties during SNL‘s time off during the current Winter Olympics.

Fans can get their first glimpse of Armisen and his band on the show when Late Night with Seth Meyers debuts on Monday, Feb. 24.
