Justin Bieber Turns Himself In to Toronto Police on Assault Charges

By Annie Reuter

Justin Bieber just can’t seem to stay out of trouble.

Less than a week after he was charged with resisting arrest without violence, a DUI and driving with an expired drivers license, Bieber turned himself into a Toronto police station regarding a previous assault charge.

According to CNN, the assault charge stems from an encounter with a limousine driver last month in which Bieber allegedly hit the driver repeatedly in the back of the head. The alleged incident happened after the limo driver picked up a group of six people outside a Toronto nightclub just before 3 a.m. on December 30, according to a police statement.

The singer traveled to Toronto to be booked on the charge and is slated to appear in a Toronto court on March 10.

In a statement obtained by CNN, a representative for Bieber writes: “The Toronto Police Service requested that Justin Bieber appear in Toronto today to face an allegation of assault relating to an incident on December 29, 2013. We anticipate that this matter will be treated as a summary offense, the equivalent of a misdemeanor in the United States.”

“Our position is that Mr. Bieber is innocent,” the representative continued. “As the matter is now before the court, it would be inappropriate to address the specifics of either the allegation or of our defense at this time.”

This isn’t the first time Bieber has been accused of assault. In 2010, he allegedly punched a 12-year-old boy in the face while playing laser-tag. Since both Bieber and the boy were underage, the charges were dropped because of a law prohibiting the dissemination of information into criminal cases involving youths, according to MTV.

Along with his assault charge, Bieber is set to be arraigned on Feb. 14 for last week’s charges in Miami.

Bieber is also facing an additional court appearance following recent claims of vandalism by a California neighbor who says Bieber egged his house.

“We will have a dialogue with the district attorney and determine, based on what we have, when we should bring the case over,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. David Thompson told CNN. “We will then take the case to the D.A. It will be up to them to file charges and what charges at that time.”

Bieber’s recent legal troubles have also caused a group of Americans to petition that the White House revoke his green card on the grounds that he is “threatening the safety of our people” and being “a terrible influence on our nation’s youth.”

Awkwardly, he dropped a video for his song “Confident” around the same time the news of his surrender took place.
