The EDM revolution in America is about to get a serious prime-time boost.
HBO, the channel responsible for such topical hits as The Newsroom and Girls, is about to delve into the world of big beats and superstar DJs with the announcement of an upcoming half-hour comedy show called Higher that’s “set in the world of electronic music” and comes with a veritable cavalcade of big-name stars attached to it.
Deadline reports that hip-hop moguls Jay Z and Will Smith will be part of the show’s circle of executive producers, which also includes Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and EDM superstar Calvin Harris, who helped develop Higher.
The show also boasts serious star power with its writer, author Irvine Welsh, best known for penning such edgy fare as Trainspotting (adapted into the 1996 film of the same name) and his most recent novel, Skagboys, which was positioned as a prequel to Trainspotting.
This new show deepens Jay Z’s business relationship with Will Smith, as the two are currently collaborating on an upcoming big-screen remake of Annie, starring Beasts of the Southern Wild actress Quvenzhané Wallis in the lead role, with supporting turns from such marquee actors as Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz and Rose Byrne.
