After teasing fans with a mysterious Twitter post promising “cool things to come,” Georgia rock outfit Manchester Orchestra has confirmed an April 1st release date for its fourth studio album, Cope, by revealing the first single, “Top Notch” (audio below).

“Cope, to me, means getting by. It means letting go, and being OK with being OK,” the band’s frontman, Andy Hull, said in a press release. “You can cope in a positive way when bad things happen, or a negative way, and that blend was a big lyrical theme for me on this album.”

While the band demoed around 28 songs in a new home studio for the self-produced album, they pared them down to a taut 38 minutes of what they term “unapologetic heavy rock.” “Top Notch” reflects that, sounding more aggressive than the band ever has before.

“We wanted to make the kind of album that’s missing at this time in rock: something that’s just brutal and pounding you over the head every track,” Hull added in regards to Cope. “Whereas [2011 album] Simple Math was a different palate with each song, a different color, I wanted this to be black and red the whole time.”

The band will follow the release of Cope with an extensive U.S. tour that kicks off mid-April in Tampa before wrapping up at the end of May with a date in Nashville.
