Lykke Li Announces New Album for 2014

"I see my albums as a trilogy, with Youth Novels as the first one and hopefully this one as the last in this chapter."

It’s been nearly three years since we’ve heard from Lykke Li. The Swedish singer-songwriter rose to popularity in 2008 thanks to her debut Youth Novels and her ethereal hit “Possibility,” which was featured on The Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack.

She went on to record a follow-up to Youth Novels, titled Wounded Rhymes, in 2011 which included her most popular song to date, the electro-pop “I Follow Rivers.” But don’t call her a pop singer.

Li opens up in a new interview with NME on her forthcoming release, due out later this year, and explains why she doesn’t consider herself a pop artist.

“I see my albums as a trilogy, with Youth Novels as the first one and hopefully this one as the last in this chapter,” she told NME.

She also explained how a breakup has had a major impact on the writing of her forthcoming release.

“It’s always about me and the guilt and the shame and the hurt and the pride and the confusion of being a woman,” she said.

In the interview, she admitted that she has always felt misunderstood as a female in the music scene.

“I always feel like I’ve been slightly misunderstood. As a woman you get judged for appearances or things like that I don’t really care about. If anything I want to be seen as a singer-songwriter rather than a pop artist. I really feel like I’ve found my voice.”

When she’s not busy writing new music, Li is working on her acting chops. She’ll make her acting debut in a Swedish crime drama, Tommy, which will be released in March. Watch the trailer below.

Lykke Li’s forthcoming, yet to be titled album, is rumored to be released later this year.
