Radio Feedback: T-Pain’s Radio Fever Dream

By Annie Reuter

Welcome to Radio Feedback,’s weekly feature where we ask artists to wax nostalgic on the first time they heard themselves on the radio.

The first time T-Pain heard his song on the radio, he was dreaming. Not in some “OMG, it’s all coming true” kind of way, but actually dreaming.

“The first song of mine that I heard on the radio was ‘Time To Make Love,‘ he told “I don’t even think it was on my first album. It was part of a mixtape I did before it came out. I was in my dad’s house in my room asleep. I definitely heard it in my sleep and I woke up and was like, ‘Oh man, I totally missed it!’ I definitely heard it but I was dreaming. I was laying down in my dream, but when I woke up I was like, ‘Oh that was really on the radio just then!’ I wish I had woken up a little earlier.”

While he’s gone on to hear plenty of his songs on the radio since becoming Auto-Tune’s poster boy, T-Pain is currently finalizing new tracks for his fifth album, Stoicville: Rise of the Phoenix, the follow-up to 2011’s Revolver. Pain recently told that he has written over 100 songs for the project and plans to whittle them down to 30 before he lets his label take a listen.

“It’s a crazy range of songs, from swing songs and songs from the 60s to reggae songs and R&B,” he said. “I’m putting a country song on my album. There’s a lot of range so it’s hard to say what we want the sound to be. Anything that we pick will be a lot of range.”

While he wouldn’t give away too much about his album, slotted for the second or third quarter of this year, he did hint at two collaborations. “I’m doing one with Busta Rhymes that’s pretty reggae,” he said.

Another possible feature includes a swing-tinged song called “Gotta Move,” which features J. Dash, whom Pain previously collaborated on “WOP.”

Pain dropped the album’s lead single, “Up Down (Do This All Day)” featuring B.o.B., last year.
