Docs from Justin Bieber & Britney Spears Flop This Holiday Season

By Shannon Carlin

Perhaps, announcing your alleged retirement the day before releasing a new movie isn’t the best idea. Just ask Justin Bieber.

It seems his Beliebers might have been too distraught to head to their local theater to see his new documentary, Believe on Christmas day. According to the Wall Street Journal, the doc, which covers the ins and outs of the 19-year-old’s pop star lifestyle, only raked in $1.25 million in its first day of release.

Though that number is nothing to sneeze at, it should be noted that this means that the film, which was released in a thousand theaters across the country, only made $1,200 per theater. It didn’t even crack the top ten holiday movies, finishing 14th in total box office sales.

Bieber’s last documentary, Never Say Never, made more than $12 million at the box office its opening day back in  2011 and went on to make $73 million.

But the Biebz shouldn’t feel too bad, Britney Spears also couldn’t garner much attention for her documentary, I Am Britney Jean.

The two-hour doc, which aired on E! and covered the lead up to her new Vegas revue, Britney: Piece of Me, couldn’t even muster a million viewers on Sunday night (Dec. 22), taking in only 706,000, according to Nielsen ratings (via USA Today).

But, don’t feel too bad for Brit Brit, her two-year residency at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino kicks off today, Dec. 27. Plus the doc gave her dad, Jamie a public forum to express his love for duct tape. Britney’s dad talks about the item three times during the documentary, even using it to fix a broken air conditioner at one point. Clearly, Britney knew what to get her dad this holiday season.

And Bieber still has time to make up lost revenue in the days ahead. He’s even taken to Twitter, not to talk about his impending retirement, but to drum up some interest for his documentary, letting fans know that this weekend is one to Believe in.
