Lostprophets Singer Pleads Guilty to Child Sex Abuse Charges
“This investigation has uncovered the most shocking and harrowing child abuse evidence I have ever seen,” said Detective Chief Inspector Peter Doyle from South Wales Police (via BBC News). “There is no doubt in my mind that Ian Watkins exploited his celebrity status in order to abuse young children.”
The Welsh singer stood alongside two female co-defendants, both of whom admitted they willingly offered up their children to Watkins. All three will have to sign the sex offenders’ register, with sentencing set for December 18.
“Ian Watkins clearly had a dangerous obsession with the most severe and extreme forms of child sex abuse,” said NSPCC Wales national head of service Des Mannion after the court proceedings. “His global public profile provided him with access to impressionable young women who he was able to manipulate to feed his horrific desires. The length of his sentence should reflect this terrible abuse of power” (via WalesOnline).
Drugs played a large part in the ongoing abuse, according to prosecuting attorney Chris Clee, with police discovering cocaine, crystal meth and GHB during searches of Watkins’ home. These searches also turned up the evidence of child abuse, some of which was termed “too extreme and distressing to report.”
Former Lostprophets guitarist Lee Gaze commented on the proceedings via Twitter, with a short message thanking fans for their support and “closure.”
Thanks for the kind words. At least there is closure now. X—
