Bruce Springsteen posted an announcement on his official website, heralding the release of “High Hopes” on November 26. There’s no word as to whether this is a one-off single, or from a forthcoming album.

“High Hopes” is familiar to Springsteen die-hards; he previously recorded it for the Blood Brothers EP, which was released in 1996 along with the film of the same name, which documented Springsteen’s brief mid-’90s reunion with the E Street Band. (The EP was included with the VHS of the documentary.)

According to Backstreets, the song was originally recorded by Tim Scott McConnell in 1987; he later re-recorded it with his band the Havalinas in 1990. It was included in some of Springsteen’s set lists at his recent tour of Australia; Springsteen was rumored to have spent some time in the studio during that leg of the tour (which featured Tom Morello filling in for Steven Van Zandt on guitar).

This wouldn’t be the first time in Springsteen’s recent history that he revisits songs already in his repertoire for a new album. The title track of 2012’s Wrecking Ball had been in Springsteen’s live sets in 2009. That album also featured “Land Of Hope And Dreams,” which he’d been performing live since 1999, and “American Land” which had been part of his set since 2006. Further back than that, 2005’s Devils And Dust saw him revisiting “All The Way Home,” which he’d written for Southside Johnny’s 1991 album Better Days.

Springsteen and the E Street Band spent much of 2013 on the road internationally promoting the Wrecking Ball album, but played no U.S. dates. Next year, they have dates in January and February scheduled for South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
