Miley Cyrus did something controversial last night (Nov. 10).

While that’s like calling the sky blue, Cyrus did indeed ignite a firestorm of outrage at the lavish MTV European Music Awards ceremony in Amsterdam by lighting up and smoking what appeared to be a joint onstage while accepting the Best Music Video prize for her much-discussed “Wrecking Ball” video.

As scandalized parties railed against the young pop star’s onstage behavior, Cyrus took to her Twitter account to let it be known in no uncertain terms that she could care less what anyone thinks about her public actions with a terse, 11-word missive.

The ensuing controversy was thorny enough that MTV edited out the footage of Cyrus smoking the hand-rolled cigarette during the American broadcast of the EMAs, a decision that was applauded by the Parents Television Council.

“Last night MTV made a responsible decision and they executed it perfectly,” said Tim Winter, the president of the Parents Television Council (via EW). “It is unclear whether MTV’s actions suggest stricter content guidelines for its TV-14 programming, or whether this is just an example of the old saying that ‘even a broken clock is right twice each day.’ We certainly hope it is the former. We applaud MTV for taking responsible actions to eliminate the drug use from its U.S. broadcast, and we urge them to make that a uniform policy for all of its programming.”

While marijuana is not legal in the Netherlands, as noted by CBS News, those who indulge can’t be arrested for holding small amounts of it, while the city’s notorious “coffee shops” where weed can be freely purchased still run rampant and are a popular tourist attraction.

Meanwhile, Cyrus fans are gearing up for the young superstar’s upcoming 38-date North American Bangerz tour in support of her latest album. The tour kicks off on Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14) in Vancouver, Canada (another city known for relaxed laws concerning marijuana), with tickets going on sale to the general public this Saturday, November 16.

There’s still no word on whether her tour merchandise will include Cyrus branded rolling papers.
