Sweden and pop music have become synonymous over the years, from ’80s hit-makers like Roxette to ’00s super-producer Max Martin to current dance-floor favorite, Robyn.

Still, it’s ’70s mega-stars ABBA who stand as the act to first snatch the world’s pop music crown in the name of Sweden. Thanks to worldwide smash hits like “Dancing Queen,” “Mamma Mia” and “Take a Chance on Me,” the vocal group has sold close to 400 million albums around the globe (and still counting!).

Now, the band seems to be contemplating a reunion next year to mark the 40th anniversary of winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with the single “Waterloo.” Mind you, ABBA has not performed live together since 1982.

“There seem to be plans to do something to mark this anniversary in some way. But I can’t say at this point what will come of them,” singer¬†Agnetha Faltskog said in a recent interview with Germany’s Welt am Sonntag news outlet (via The Hollywood Reporter), adding that “of course it is something we’re thinking about,” when queried about a potential reunion to mark the occasion.

After “Waterloo” won the 1974 Eurovision competition, the song went on to top charts around the world, leading to an impressive run of hits until the band stopped working together in 1982 despite never formally breaking up.

ABBA has resisted most attempts to reunite the group since, though the four original members did briefly convene at the Swedish premiere of the movie Mamma Mia in 2008, the film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical of the same name, based on the band’s catalog of songs.

Now would be the time for ABBA to make a reunion happen, according to Faltskog, primarily due to the passage of time.

“We’re all getting older,” she said. “I can’t imagine going onto the stage on walking sticks.”
