The Teen Choice Awards: The only night of the year when millions of fans can tune in to see pink-haired ballerinas, on-stage fire pits and most importantly, an up-close-and-personal view of Harry Styles’ butt.

One Direction took the stage with their latest single “Best Song Ever” to open Sunday’s (Aug. 11) show, which honored entertainers in categories covering music, television, movies, sports and more as voted by actual teens.

The Pop Art-themed set filled with a flurry of red and yellow confetti as Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson slapped hands with the screaming fans who surrounded the stage. The group scored big, taking home awards for Choice Music Group, Choice Group Single for “Live While We’re Young,” Choice Love Song for “Little Things” and Choice Summer Tour.

Hosts Darren Criss (of Glee) and Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale zeroed in on Styles after the band’s performance, asking him to take part in breaking the world twerking record. He begrudgingly obliged.

Teenaged giggles abounded throughout the venue, but Demi Lovato had real reason to smile as she performed “Made in the USA,” featuring former Disney colleague Nick Jonas on drums. The singer added a classic rock flair to her performance with on-stage pyrotechnics and a New Order T-shirt.

She took home awards for Choice Female Artist, Choice Single for “Heart Attack” and Choice Female TV Personality for her tenure on The X Factor.

Likewise, rockers Paramore kicked it up a few more notches as they performed their latest single “Still Into You,” which is currently feeling the crossover love on pop radio. Frontwoman Hayley Williams rocked her signature hot orange ‘do, backed up by twirling ballerinas (a la the song’s colorful video) and a balloon drop over the audience.

Presenter Nine Dobrev, of The Vampire Diaries, introduced their long-awaited Teen Choice debut: “We’ve tried to get them to play here every year.” The band walked away with the award for Choice Rock Group – their tenth Teen Choice Award since 2008.

Florida Georgia Line and Nelly riffed on the show’s summer theme with a performance of their song “Cruise,” where bikini-clad backup dancers brought heat to the evening telecast.

However, the night really belonged to teen idols like Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez, who also left with armfuls of surfboards, Teen Choice’s alternative to golden statuettes.
