Lady Gaga is now present thanks to New York performance artist Marina Abramović.
In keeping with the first syllable of Gaga’s new album ARTPOP, the singer stopped by the Marina Abramović Institute to practice the Abramović Method, described as “a series of exercises and environments designed to increase awareness of their physical and mental experience in the moment.”
Her experience was partly captured on film and released in conjunction with Abramović’s Kickstarter campaign for the institute. Watch Gaga center herself, don horned masks, strip naked, and hug a block of ice in the NSFW video above. You know, business as usual for Gaga.
While the video is only a short few minutes, Ms. Stephanie Germanotta was no stranger to Marina Abramović’s longform aesthetic, as they both previously took part in a marathon reading of the sci-fi novel Solaris, also apparently unclothed.
And Gaga isn’t the only mega pop star Abramović has been using to create awareness. Inspired by her performance piece at MoMA in 2010 called The Artist Is Present, Abramović recently teamed up with Jay Z for both an installation at Pace Gallery where Jay Z rapped “Picasso Baby” directly at her and others for six hours, and the subsequent “Picasso Baby” art video.
