This Week In Late Night TV: Ciara, Sara Bareilles, Rhye… And Jesse & The Rippers?

It’s a tradition as old as the Johnny Carson show: Most nights, since 1966, bands big and small play on the national stage of late night television. Sometimes good things happen, sometimes bad things happen, but the performances are always worth watching. They’re captivating mostly because they offer the raw sound of a live band and the professional video and audio recording of a late night television show.

This week, July 15-19, sees the return of R&B stateswoman Ciara, the national debut of Americana up-and-comer Pokey LaFarge, and, if the world loves us all, a reunion performance of Full House band Jesse and the Rippers.

Late Show With David Letterman
Monday, July 15 – Valerie Simpson
Tuesday, July 16 – Pokey LaFarge

Pokey LaFarge is a relative unknown making big waves in the right waters. His recent releases have been through Jack White’s Third Man Records, which is one of the few assured signs of quality these days. Tune in to see legit Americana-meets-blues.

Wednesday, July 17 – Courtyard Hounds
Thursday, July 18 –  Cold War Kids

Jimmy Kimmel Live
Monday, July 15 – Ciara

Ciara, the self-titled album from – you guessed it – Ciara, was released last week, and is the singer’s most anticipated effort since she burst onto the scene with debut album Goodies (and its hit single “1, 2 Step”). Her recent single “I’m Out,” which features Nicki Minaj in full Roman mode, is the break-up record of the summer. Whether or not she’ll bust that out on Kimmel is unknown, but it definitely won’t be the same without Minaj’s spitfire spitting.

Tuesday, July 16 – The Neighbourhood
Wednesday, July 17 – Iron & Wine
Thursday, July 18 –  RHYE
Friday, July 19 –  ZZ Ward

The Tonight Show With Jay Leno

Tuesday, July 16 – Talib Kweli
Wednesday, July 17 – Serena Ryder
Thursday, July 18 –  Robert Randolph and The Family Band
Friday, July 19 –  Sara Bareilles

The “Brave” singer unleashes her latest album, The Blessed Unrest, which has the singer expanding her sound and trying to get a little weird. Trying being the key word here.

Late Night With Jimmy Fallon
Monday, July 15 – Adam Ant
Tuesday, July 16 – Mayer Hawthorne
Wednesday, July 17 – Gogol Bordello
Thursday, July 18 –  Fall Out Boy
Friday, July 19 – Jesse and the Rippers

Yeah—Jesse and the Rippers, from Full House. Fallon has hosted TV band reunions in the past with the cast of California Dreams, so this might actually go down. Here’s hoping John Stamos makes a bewigged appearance. It needs to happen, and if it does we’ll all remember it… forever.
