Cory Monteith, better know as Finn Hudson on Glee, was found dead at the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel in Vancouver on Saturday (July 13). He was 31 years old.
“We are so saddened to confirm that the reports on the death of Cory Monteith are accurate,” his rep said in a statement. “We are in shock and mourning this tragic loss.”
The actor had checked into the hotel on July 6 and was expected to check out on Saturday. When Monteith missed his noon checkout time, hotel staff went to his room and found him, according to People.
In a police press conference, Acting Police Chief Doug LePard said the cause of death had not be confirmed, but there were no indications of foul play. An autopsy has been set for Monday.
LePard also sent his condolences to “the family, friends, castmates and millions of fans of Mr. Monteith.”
“As was the case in countless homes, I watched Glee regularly with my daughters,” he said. “And I know there will be shock and sadness in many households with the news of his tragic death.”
Back in March, the Calgary native, who began his acting career in Canada and was cast in Glee back in 2009, admitted himself into rehab for the second time. He previously checked into a treatment center when he was 19. Monteith told Parade Magazine in 2011 that he made his struggles with substance abuse public in hopes to help others.
His girlfriend and fellow Glee co-star Lea Michele showed her support for her beau telling People, “I love and support Cory and will stand by him through this. I am grateful and proud he made this decision.”
Police confirmed Michele was not in the hotel with Monteith, but there is no word yet on if she visited him at any point during his stay in Vancouver. The couple were last publicly seen together on June 8 at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball.
A statement was released by Glee’s executive producers, 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Broadcasting Company shortly after the news of Monteith’s death broke: “We are deeply saddened by this tragic news. Cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person. He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.”
It’s unclear how Monteith’s sudden passing will impact the show, which is set to have its fifth season premiere on September 19.
