Melissa Etheridge To Wed Following DOMA’s Gay Marriage Victory

With the U.S. Supreme Court’s blessing, Melissa Etheridge announced yesterday (June 26) that she plans to marry her girlfriend, television writer Linda Wallem.

The rocker took to Twitter to announce the news, which came after the high court ruled against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), allowing for California to legalize same-sex marriage.

The singer called in to CNN to share details on her marriage plans, which she said she was “proud” to share with her children.

“It is about family and I love my four kids. I called my now-fiancee. I’m looking forward to marrying my partner of three years… I’m going to get married in the state of California,” she said in the interview. “I woke (the kids) up this morning telling them the Supreme Court ruling on DOMA… I love everybody out there. It’s a great day. Love is love and America is beautiful… I’m proud to be an American.”

Etheridge had been outspoken against California’s Proposition 8, which was passed by voters in 2008 to ban gay marriage in the state. She lauded Supreme Court justice’s decision to act in support of gay rights as they overturned the proposition by ruling DOMA unconstitutional.

Etheridge has been a gay rights advocate since first coming out in 1993. Countless musicians and celebrities, like Adam Lambert and Demi Lovato, also tweeted their support and excitement yesterday following the ruling.
