Before Florida Georgia Line‘s “Cruise” (featuring Nelly) began getting airplay on Top 40 radio, it was a massive country hit. “Cruise” was the country duo’s very first single, and it made it all the way to No. 1 on the country airplay charts back in December.
This new version of “Cruise” is a remix done in collaboration with Nelly. And once again, the song is ‘cruising’ up the charts.
Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard revealed to Radio.com how the collaboration came together.
“We had some pop stations that were wanting a different version of ‘Cruise’ that we could send out, and he [Nelly] is a labelmate,” Kelley explained. “We heard he was a fan of what we were doing and the song. We knew he wanted to do it, and literally a day or two later we had the track and we cranked it up on the bus.”
The Florida Georgia Line boys were blown away by Nelly’s version. Hubbard said getting the track was like Christmas morning.
“I literally think that whole weekend we probably listened to it a couple hundred times,” Kelley admitted. “We’re huge fans of him. I don’t think we could have picked anybody better. It fits what we’re doing, it fits what he’s doing. He’s a country boy at heart. We’re thankful that he put his amazing talent on our song.”
Kelley told Minneapolis station BUZ’N 102.9 that Nelly was excited about the project, too. Which was, of course, “really gratifying” for the country duo, said Kelley. “And it makes it official. When Nelly’s excited about something that you’re doing, it’s cool, man, it’s an honor.”
Last month, Florida Georgia Line released a music video of their “Cruise” remix that also features Nelly. Shot in the California desert, the video shows the guys cruising in some impressive rides with (of course) a few beautiful ladies along for the ride. Watch below.
The duo also performed “Cruise” live with Nelly during the recent TV special Tim McGraw’s Superstar Summer Nights.
