Fans of Mad Men were treated to the debut of an animated and eye-catching new 90-second commercial for Oreo cookies that featured “Wonderfilled Anthem,” a new song from Adam Young, better known as Owl City.
“They came to me with the idea of sharing wonder with the world, or making days brighter,” Young told MTV News regarding the spot. “And those themes are similar to what I’m drawn to, musically and lyrically.”
The song is part of Oreo’s current “Wonderfilled” campaign, which was crafted by the Martin Agency in conjunction with the 101st anniversary of the popular cream-filled chocolate cookies. The launch is being closely watched by advertising pundits, as it follows an extensive and successful 100th birthday campaign last year.
While many were charmed by the playful 90-second spot, a vocal contingent of naysayers took to the internet to denounce the commercial as cloying and trite, with a series of mean-spirited messages being sent out on Twitter.
Still, Adam Young is enjoying his stint singing the upbeat Oreo jingle (which is available for free download here), especially as an unabashed lover of the beloved cookies.
“I’m being completely honest when I say that I’ve always loved Oreos,” he said. “Whenever I go on tour, I always ask for them on my rider. Backstage, there’s always Oreos … so, aside from the themes of the commercial, to me, it made sense to do this.”
Owl City recently debuted a new video for the single “Metropolis,” found on the act’s most recent full-length, The Midsummer Station.
Young and company are scheduled to open for Imagine Dragons in St. Louis, MO (May 15), and again at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre on May 16.
