PSY Asks That You Not Call Him A One-Hit Wonder

K-Pop sensation PSY had the entire world galloping around at one point with “Gangnam Style,” the most-watched video of all time (1.5 billion views and counting), but the reality is that the hype surrounding him has died down.

During a recent interview with New York radio station 92.3 NOW, PSY explained the transition and why he shouldn’t be called a one-hit wonder.

“After ‘Gangnam Style,’ I hesitated to answer the question ‘What’s next?'” he explained. “Literally, right after that short period of hesitation they started calling me one-hit wonder all over the world. I was like, ‘What do you mean one-hit wonder?’ I’ve already been in this industry in my country for 12 years.”

Indeed, the South Korean singer’s first album was released 12 years ago, in 2001. He’s earned more and more notoriety in the Asian music market with each subsequent release.

“When I do some jobs for 12 years and then you’re called one-hit wonder, that feels really great,” he continued, sarcastically berating his fifteen minutes of fame label.

Critics may have to scratch the one-hit wonder title, with PSY’s current single “Gentleman” receiving more than 38 million views on YouTube in just one day’s time (a new record). Currently “Gentleman” has over 300 million views and counting.

PSY said he was shocked at the instant success of “Gentleman,” currently at No. 33 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart.

“I was so surprised,” he said. “Honestly, with this ‘Gentleman’ timing-wise ,I thought this time was defensive. To defend and try hard to maintain what I got from ‘Gangnam Style,’ that was my only goal. My maximum goal with ‘Gentleman’ was being number 10 on Billboard [Hot 100] and making a hundred million views on video. But it’s far beyond that so I’m done with the song right now.”
